Fantastic Fall Books!
We are officially in the fall season, and while we might be enjoying some amazingly warm weather right now, here in New England, we know the chilly weather is coming! And what better way to enjoy (or manage!) that than by curling up under a fuzzy blanket with a good book? These titles are all perfect for cozy reading, with fall vibes, dark academia themes, and autumn settings. Here are some of the titles featured in our "Fantastic Fall Books" display:
"The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue" by V. E. Schwab has all the mystical magic you need for a fall book pick. "France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever--and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world. But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name." This 2020 fantasy novel has an average Goodreads rating of 4.18 stars and a cult following.
"This Tender Land" by William Kent Kreuger is set in 1932 Minnesota. "In the summer of 1932, on the banks of Minnesota's Gilead River, the Lincoln Indian Training School is a pitiless place where Native American children, forcibly separated from their parents, are sent to be educated. It is also home to Odie O’Banion, a lively orphan boy whose exploits constantly earn him the superintendent’s wrath. Odie and his brother, Albert, are the only white faces among the hundreds of Native American children at the school. After committing a terrible crime, Odie and Albert are forced to flee for their lives along with their best friend, Mose, a mute young man of Sioux heritage. Out of pity, they also take with them a brokenhearted little girl named Emmy. Together, they steal away in a canoe, heading for the mighty Mississippi in search for a place to call home. Over the course of one unforgettable summer, these four orphan vagabonds journey into the unknown, crossing paths with others who are adrift, from struggling farmers and traveling faith healers to displaced families and lost souls of all kinds. With the feel of a modern classic, This Tender Land is an enthralling, bighearted epic that shows how the magnificent American landscape connects us all, haunts our dreams, and makes us whole." This 2019 historical fiction novel has a 4.39 average Goodreads star rating.
"The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane" by Katherine Howe features a theme that's perfect for Massachusetts in October. "While readying her grandmother's abandoned home for sale, Connie Goodwin discovers an ancient key in a seventeenth-century Bible with a scrap of parchment bearing the name Deliverance Dane. In her quest to discover who this woman was and seeking a rare artifact--a physick book--Connie begins to feel haunted by visions of the long-ago witch trials and fears that she may be more tied to Salem's past than she could have imagined." This 2009 historical fiction novel has a 3.72 star rating on Goodreads.
