Crafting in the New Year with Creativebug

January 3, 2025 Art, Reference, Resources T. Bowser

January is National Hobby Month, and the library has lessons available for crafters and makers of all kinds. If it's too cold out to join a class, you can still try out a course on your own time with CreativeBug. Here's a quick sample of new content for budding creators available this month.

Available now: Yoga of Yarn: A Daily Practice in Mindfulness and Making

Knitter and yoga practitioner Liza Laird will show you how to incorporate body, mind, and spirit into your creative process, demonstrating the Mala Cowl stitch project from Laird's book Yoga of Yarn. This program does not require you to be a knitter or to practice yoga, but presents movement and mindfulness tools that you can use for any art or craft practice.

Premiering January 8: Mending With Wool Felt

Learn a fun and decorative way to mend your clothes using natural wool felt. Melissa Lang Lytle of Hex House Crowns shows technique for mending directly onto the fabric for lighter fabrics, and needle felting patchwork for materials such as denim or canvas. Keep your garments alive and as unique as you with just a few simple steps.

Premiering January 15: Mixtape: Eyes on CreativeBug TV

CreativeBug Mixtapes are instructional playlists around a theme or topic. In January, it's all about eyes. A variety of artists will share ideas and techniques for hundreds of ways to see into the soul and capture the eye in drawings, sketches, paintings, and more.

Premiering January 22: Tetra Pak Printing

Yes, that TetraPak! Your clean cartons from items such as milk, cheese, ice cream, and other frozen and aseptic food packaging can become a printing plate that's recyclable and virtually free. CreativeBug editor-in-chief Courtney Cerruti will encourage you to let loose on the printing medium. Experiment without worrying about the material cost! Have fun with this unique and accessible method of printmaking.

Once the classes are posted, they are available on demand, anytime. You can find CreativeBug through the resources page our website, or download the mobile app wherever you get your apps. Your library card number is your login, and as always, get in touch if you have any questions.
