Books for Toddlers on Monday, Oct. 31
Happy Halloween! It was exciting to see so many children wearing costumes at storytime this morning. Since my own costume was the title character from The Very Hungry Caterpillar, that was the first book we read together.

Toddler Storytime, Friday, October 28
Once again, a wonderful group of children and adults gathered together today for a spirited storytime. The grownups joined in with energy and gusto, really continuing to provide a positive experience for everyone in the room.
The children (and grownups) paid close attention to the story today with great anticipation of what will happen next. I read Go Away Big Green Monster by Ed Emberley. In this fabulous book, a monster is made by adding one thing at a time and then when told to “GO AWAY,” the monster slowly disappears, one part at a time. It was clearly a favorite today! Ed Emberley is the author of many other engaging books. Come on in to the library to check them out.

Baby Storytime, Friday, October 28
Baby Storytime today was filled with great joy and happiness! We sang Happy 1st Birthday to two of our friends, heard about babies sleeping through the night, trying food for the first time, rolling over, teething, and so much more!
I talked a lot today about the importance of working hard to try to read daily with your baby. You should find a time during the day that works well for both you and the baby. For some people that time is right before bed. For others, after a nap might be a good time or after waking up in the morning. In addition, we talked about having books around your home that your baby will have access to, so that he or she can explore the books on his/her own time. You want babies to feel comfortable around books in order to help their love of literacy develop.
We read another favorite today by Sandra Boynton. Come into the library to check out other Sandra Boynton books that will leave you with a smile on your face!

Books for Toddlers on Wed., Oct. 26
Today we read three books in toddler storytime! Good Morning, Chick by Mirra Ginsburg was a big hit. Toddlers love practicing their animal sounds. Cluck-cluck!
Our sweet snuggle book today was Jonathan London’s Snuggle Wuggle. We learned how different animals give hugs as we snuggled our grown-ups.
Night Owl by Toni Yuly was our final book today. When little owl can’t find his mama, he listens to the sounds around him to hear her calling, “hooo hooo!”
Thank you for joining me for storytime! See you next week!

Books for Preschoolers on Wed., Oct. 26
We started with some spooky fun today with Kathryn O. Galbraith’s Boo, Bunny! After reading about two brave bunnies trick-or-treating in the dark, we went on a ghost hunt (a variation of last week’s We’re Going on a Bear Hunt). It was a lot of fun being brave together and finding a ghost in a haunted hous
e!
The ghost hunt gave me the wiggles, so after working out those wiggles with body rhymes, we read Wiggle by Doreen Cronin. “Would you join me for a wiggle? Would you wiggle on the moon? I think we’re out of wiggles now. See you wiggle soon!”
Good-Night, Owl! by Pat Hutchins
was our next book. Poor owl can’t get to sleep with so many other animals making noise! After hearing some of the sounds different birds make , we read a really fun read-aloud, Antoinette Portis’s Froodle. When little brown bird decides to say something other than “peep,” the other birds try being silly, too!
Finally, we read a beautiful fall story, The Little Yellow Leaf by Carin Berger. One leaf has a hard time letting go of his tree like all the other leaves until he finds a friend.
Thank you for joining me for storytime. See you next week!

When your child is able to hold a crayon or pen, encourage him or
her to “write” (or scribble) his or her name on paper.

Books for 4-6 year olds on Tuesday, October 25
It’s almost Halloween, a day that’s a favorite with kids and grownups alike! There are so many funny and/or slightly scary picture books about Halloween that it’s hard to choose what to read. Today these were the ones we enjoyed:
Farmer Brown doesn’t like Halloween, but the animals in his barn sure do! Farmer Brown hides in his house; but he still hears lots of scary noises that he can’t identify. What’s really going on? Read the story to find out!
Farm stands all over New England are piled high with pumpkins! Soon we’ll be making pie with them, but for Halloween they turn into pumpkin heads! This story showed us jack o’lanterns of all shapes and sizes. Simple text highlights the large, realistic painted illustrations.
Our next story told the tale of a little old lady who had an unusual experience on her walk home on a dark and windy night. This story is a little bit scary, but it involves a lot of fun repetition, and all is happily resolved at the end.
Our last story had lots of flaps to lift, and depending on which way we lifted (left, right, up, or down) we either found something nice or nasty in the witch’s kitchen. Would you rather eat biscuits and cake, or spiders and snakes? You never know what you’ll find in the witch’s kitchen! Happy Halloween to all!

Toddler Storytime, Friday, October 21
There was a lot of great energy in the room today and we enjoyed a wonderful time together. One of the things that made today’s storytime so much fun was the high participation from the grownups in the room. So many people joined in singing the songs, doing the fingerplays and performing the different actions that go with some of the songs. When your children see that you are joining in and having fun, it leads them to also join in and see that you are both enjoying the time together. In addition, the children are hearing all the rhymes, repetitions and sounds that continue to help make literacy connections that will serve them well in the future.
Today’s story was a great story to join in on and help to read. It is a book by Denise Fleming called SHOUT! Shout it out! The author encourages all readers to shout it out while learning basic concepts such as numbers, letters, colors, animals and more. How often is your little one asked to SHOUT! It was a fun story read/shouted by everyone today!
