Our first story today was about some unusual friends:

We talked about whether cats and mice are usually friends, and what might happen if they were.  I’m relieved to report the story has a happy ending!

With this story, we could have counted a million jelly beans if we’d had the time!  We discovered that a million is a big, big number– the book has a giant foldout page with a million jelly beans in all different colors.

The joy of reading

Reading222Learning to read can be very difficult for a child.  Children need to learn letters – both upper and lower case.  They need to learn the sound(s) a letter makes.  They need to blend those sounds together, and they need to blend the words into sentences.  Motivation really helps!

It is a child’s interest and enjoyment of books that provides most of the motivation. When children hear many stories, are encouraged to make up stories, and want to listen to favorite stories over and over, they will want to read all by themselves.

Did you know that Go, Dog. Go! by P. D. Eastman has very easy vocabulary even though it is 64 pages long? It is certainly one of my favorite books.  I love the dogs, the colors, the opposites, the cars and the party hat!  Give it a try.  ~Maureen

Llama Llama is dramatic on lots of occasions, so it should be no surprise that there is a lot of drama during the holiday season.  But as always, the little llama is comforted by mom at the end of the story.

Dinosaur on Hanukkah tells the story of a dinosaur who visits a boy and participates in many activities during Hanukkah.

The other 3 books I read provided comforting stories for children and parents.  They were soothing for all of us.
