Pajama Storytime on Monday, July 11, 2016

Summer is here and that means PJ storytime happens every Monday evening at 7 PM.  Lots of kids showed up wearing their pajamas (some quite fancy!) and hugging their teddy bears.  This storytime is presented by our StoryTeens, a specially trained group of teen volunteers.  All ages are welcome; pajamas optional!

Image of itemImage of itemWe listened to two stories that had to do with the moon, which was rising outside as we read.   The Moon’s Almost Here is almost a poem, as a child says goodnight to everything around him, and welcomes the rising moon.  In Kitten’s First Full Moon, a young kitten has an exciting, and sometimes frustrating, adventure as she tries to get ever closer to a large full moon glowing in the sky.  Both books have different, though equally beautiful, large illustrations that capture the wonder of the night; repetitive text is soothing and encourages a child’s participation.

While we were saying goodnight, we said goodnight to baseball, too.  After an exciting game, a young fan says goodnight to everything at the ballpark.  The moon is featured in this story as well!

Image of itemTap the Magic Tree is a favorite title of ours, as it follows a tree through the seasons.  On each page, the text asks the listener to tap or clap to help the tree bloom and grow.  The story moves through all the seasons, beginning and ending with spring.  Our trees are all green now– what season comes next, and what will happen to all the leaves??

Little white rabbit is curious– what would it be like to fly like a butterfly, be tall like a tree, or be still like a stone?  He imagines these and other adventures as he hops about; then returns home to his mother’s hug.  A perfect way to end bunny’s day, and a perfect way for us to end our storytime!

Dads and Donuts on Saturday, July 9, 2016

What’s the best thing to do on a gloomy and unusually cool Saturday morning in July?  Why, come to the library for storytime, of course!  Many dads, moms, grandparents, and kids of all ages listened to stories and sang songs.

Image of itemSince rain was predicted, we started with a rain story.  This one has lots of silly made-up words that were fun to say, like “….splish sploosh squash squoosh, oochy sploochy woochy woosh!”

Image of itemOur next story had more silly words in it, with some birds who decided they wanted to say a lot more besides “peep” or “coo.”  There’s a bit of a message to this story, too; but mostly we laughed at all the different funny words the birds used.

Image of itemElephant and Piggie are known for often being silly, and this next story was certainly no exception!  Piggie tries to get his friend, Gerald, to try his favorite food:  stinky, messy, fly-laden slop!  Gerald doesn’t want to hurt his best friend’s feelings, but he can’t get too excited about eating something that looks awful to him.  What will he do??  Colorful, expressive pictures made us laugh as we looked at Gerald’s horrified face; and Piggie’s enthusiasm was equally amusing!

Image of itemPete the Cat has become an instant classic– it’s a book with which an amazing number of children are already familiar.  That was great for me, as everyone could help sing Pete’s song.  Groovy!

Image of itemFor our last story, we read Yes Day, in which, on one day each year, a child gets to have any question answered with a yes!  As you might imagine, there are a few unusual requests, but all are honored in the spirit of the day.  Will yes day happen at your house?  You can decide after you read this story!

Baby Storytime, Friday, July 8, 2016

A happy day for all as the summer session for Baby Storytime began!  The summer session for babies  will meet on Fridays at 10:00am through August 19.  It was great to see some familiar faces and to welcome some new babies and their caregivers to the Friday morning storytime.   (Anyone can come to the storytime any Friday with your baby (0-12 months old.)  Together we sang songs, did some fingerplays and some movement with the babies.   After sharing some thoughts about the importance and benefits of reading to babies, we read a fun and silly book together by the fabulous Sandra Boynton.

Click on this image and see if we have the book in the library.  Or come into the library and check out many other funny and enjoyable books by Sandra Boynton!

Music and Science Programs for Children

We have some special programs in July for children of all ages.

MUSIC:
There are 2 evening concerts at our MacKay Branch in North Chelmsford:
TomVin copyThe Toe Jam Band, with Tom and Vinny, will be here on Wednesday, July 13 at 6:30 pm.

This is a repeat performance, because the children loved them so much last time. This program is very appropriate for young children.

The other concert for kids at MacKay this summer features Ben Rudnick and Friends.

Ben has entertained us for several years at our Teddy Bear Concertben rudnick for preschoolers.  He has also appeared on the Town Common.  This year he will be at MacKay.  Join us on Wednesday,  July 20 at 6:30 pm for lots of great music, including some silly songs.

SCIENCE:
Yo-yo master Ooch will be at the Main Library on Thursday, July 14 at 10:30 am. He’ll dazzle us with his yo-yo tricks and then explain the science behind them.
We recommend this program for ages 6 and up.

This program is sponsored by the kdkfoundation.

The Museum of Science will bring their portable Planetarium to the Main Library!
We will have 4 shows on Thursday, July 21.  You have a choice of the following times:  10:30, 11:15, 12:00 and 1:00. Adults may attend with children, just indicate that on the registration form.  Online registration begins July 7.  You must be at least 6 years old to attend this program.  No younger siblings please.  Parents do not need to attend with the children.  Supervising younger siblings in the Children’s Room is best.

Check the Events Calendar for many more programs this summer.

Family Day Care Traveling Storytime, June 2016

This month brought great fun at each family day care.  The children are usually waiting at the door or already sitting down when I arrive.  There are many squeals of delight and curiosities.  “What’s in your bag today?”  “What are you going to read?”  “Do you have a Pete the Cat book?” “Eggs?”  (shaker eggs!)  And so on.

Image of itemAt many houses this month, the first book I read was My Bike by Byron Barton.  In Byron Barton style, this is a simple story about a man riding his bike to work.  The children are always surprised to find out that he is riding his bike to his job which is being a clown!  It is a fun story, with simple text.  In fact, at a few of the homes this month, some of the older children were able to read the words in the story!

In My Bike, the clown wears polka dot overalls, leading us to talk about polka dots.  Using a very large pair of paper pants and talking about colors, the children each got a turn to attach some dots and create a pair of polka dot pants.  This was followed by a fun reading/singing/dancing of Eric Litwin’s Sing and Dance in Your Polka Dot Pants.  This story has a catchy phrase of “sing and dance in your polka dot pants.”  At the end of the story, we went around and personalized the song Image of itemdepending on each child’s pants that day.  We sang, “Sing and dance in your flowered pants,” “Sing and dance in your striped pants,” “Sing and dance in your blue pants,” and so many more versions.  It is a catchy tune and one that we continued to sing throughout the visit.
