Celebrate the Olympics at the Library

Fencing will begin at the Rio Olympics on Saturday, August 6.  Learn about this sport at the library on Thursday, August 4 at 10:30 am, so you will understand about the moves and the scoring.  This program is designed for children ages 6 and up.  Drop-in.

Jungle Jim will be here on Thursday, August 11 at 10:30 am.  He will bring lots of amazing balloons, and you will be challenged to many fun games.  Children ages 6 and up can join the fun.

This summer we will challenge children to make  Ice Cream at the library.  There are 3 sessions to choose from, at the Main Library and the MacKay Branch.  Visit the library’s Events Calendar to register for one of them.  Children must be at least 6 years old for this activity.  It takes strength and perseverance.

Baby Storytime, 0-12 months, Friday, July 29

Lots of babies came out today for storytime with their moms, dads, uncles, grandparents and nannies.  Everyone joined in with great spirit and enthusiasm to help create a joyful time together.

We read a silly Sandra Boynton book together called Blue Hat, Green Hat. I often mentioned how much I love Sandra Boynton so I have listed several of her books today. (There are many more!) They are all wonderful!

Baby Storytime, 0-12 months, Friday, July 22

Once again, the library proved to be a place of comfort and cool air as the temperature outside continued to rise.  Many families got in out of the heat to enjoy baby storytime together!  We talked a lot about the importance of reading to babies, having books available for the babies to explore and finding a time in your schedule to read to your baby daily.  I offered a handout that lists some Favorite Board Books to read with your baby.   You can access the list through our website (chelmsfordlibrary.org, go to Kids, click on Children’s Main Page, click on Book Lists on the right side-underneath Quick Links, and them click on  Favorite Board Books.)

Today we read another classic and a favorite for many.

Baby Storytime, Friday, July 15

Many babies and their caregivers found their way into the library this morning on this hot and muggy day!  We had babies of all ages, from a new three week old up to someone who will turn one next month!  All babies (up to 12 months) are always welcome!

We spent a bit of time this morning talking about exposing the babies to sign language as another form of communication that he or she can use before oral language develops.  We have many resources at the library to help you get on your way with teaching your baby sign language.  Today we talked about the usefulness of the sign for “more,” which is also the first sign we use in the song “The More We Get Together.”

More in Baby Sign LanguageThis is the sign for “more.”

Books for Preschoolers on Wednesday, July 13 and Friday, July 15

The theme for the 2016 Summer Reading Program is On Your Mark, Get Set, READ! Many of this summer’s activities revolve around the idea of sports, games, and exercise. This week, we incorporated the theme into our preschool storytimes. Click on the cover of each book to view them in our catalog.

At Friday’s storytime at the MacKay branch, I shared one additional book that isn’t about sports at all, but it felt like a good choice for today.
