Last Week To Fill Out Your Library Survey (And Win!)

Raffle basketThanks to everyone who has completed a Library Survey! The raffle drawing will be this Friday, June 15th – so if you haven’t completed your survey, this is the final week.

The raffle prize is a baseball-themed basket, with books and Lowell Spinners tickets. Of course, the information you provide on the survey is very important too – we’ll use it to help tailor library services to the needs of Chelmsford, to make sure we’re providing tools and services most useful to Town residents.

For instance: many people are indicating they’d like the library to be open on Sundays. So, we will be! Sunday hours will begin the weekend after Columbus Day, October 14, 2012, and end the weekend prior to Memorial Day weekend, May 19, 2013. Sunday hours will be 1:00 – 5:00 PM.

The more information we hear from you, the better we can meet the needs of our community. Thank you!

Library will be open on Sundays in the Fall

I [heart] SundaysAt town meeting on Monday, April 30th, 2012, town meeting representatives voted to approve the library budget – which included restoration of Sunday hours at the main library from October to May.

Sunday hours will begin the weekend after Columbus Day, October 14, 2012, and end the weekend prior to Memorial Day weekend, May 19, 2013. Sunday hours will be 1:00 – 5:00 PM.

The library hasn’t been open on Sundays since 2007, due to tightened budgets. We’re happy to have this funding restored, so the library is able to serve patrons at a time that is convenient for many people.

Please complete this quick Library Survey

This dynamic presentation will cover the topics of addiction and how addiction causes physical changes in the developing brain, discuss experimenting versus gateway drugs, and introduce the topic of pain and treatment as it relates to addiction. We will also discuss resources and proper medication disposal.

A personal story of addiction and the path he has traveled will be presented by a young 27 year old Chelmsford High alumni student.

If you would like any further information please call Sue Rosa, RN, Manager of Healthcare Services at the Board of Health 978- 250-5243, or you can print the program flyer [pdf].

New Resource for Antique Research and Prices

P4A Price for Antiques database

The Library recently subscribed to the P4A Antiques Reference database. It’s a quick way to check how much an antique might be worth, based on what similar pieces have sold at recent auctions.

The focus is on collectibles and historic Americana, including furniture, china, glassware, folkart, brass, silver, iron, artwork, and major antique collectibles, with complete information on when, where, and for what price the antique was sold. The database will also provide a little background information on each item, including date, maker, etc, based on the information that was provided at the auction.

Because antiques are described differently by different people, don’t give up after your first search. Try describing your piece in various ways, and also try the country of origin, material used, and maker, if possible.

If you have any questions about the P4A Antiques Reference database, please contact the Reference Desk.

Library Resources Available 24/7 with Your Library Anytime

Library Anytime logo

To celebrate National Library Week, the library is launching “Your Library Anytime” – https://www.chelmsfordlibrary.org/anytime – to highlight all of the library services and resources that are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Whether you’re trying to finish your homework the night before it’s due, sitting on a beach and want to download an ebook, riding the train to work and feel like reading a magazine, or missed last week’s speaker on your favorite topic – the library can help, even after our doors are closed.

Your Library Anytime is divided up into general sections, with links to specific resources – both library tools and free online resources – which are all available 24/7. And we’ll be adding more links as we grow, so we’d love to hear your feedback – let us know what you’d like the library to offer! Send your comments to Becky Herrmann, Library Director, bherrmann@mvlc.org – or better yet, go to https://www.chelmsfordlibrary.org/anytime and choose one of the other ways to connect with us, 24/7.

Get a Free Home Heat Loss Evaluation

Seal of the Town of ChelmsfordThe Town of Chelmsford’s Office of Recycling / Waste is working with Sagewell, a local Massachusetts energy efficiency company, to bring home energy audits to Chelmsford. This energy scan is free to the public, and will help indicate to home and building owners if they are losing money by having heat escape their home/building.

Because of the predicted “cold snap” next week, Sagewell will be conducting their audits then. If you’re interested, you must sign up before Saturday, March 24th.

For more information, visit http://www.sagewell.com/chelmsford or read the Office of Recycling / Waste’s press release on this program [pdf]. Or, contact Jennifer Almeida, Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator at jalmeida@townofchelmsford.us or 978-250-5203.
