Access to the Virtual Catalog is Back!

At long last (although it's only been a few months), library patrons can once again place requests in the statewide Virtual Catalog.

This functionality was lost when we migrated from our old catalog to the new Evergreen catalog, because Evergreen and the Virtual Catalog were not able to communicate properly. All summer, developers at the MVLC Central Site office have been working on restoring this communication, and after this weekend's update, it's finally back.

Here's how connecting to the Virtual Catalog works in Evergreen:

At the bottom of every page, there is a Virtual Catalog link. You should still search the MVLC catalog first, but if you can't find what you're looking for, click the Virtual Catalog link at the bottom of each catalog page (or contact the library).

This will link you to the Virtual Catalog login page. On this page, first, use the dropdown box in the middle of the page to choose the library in which you'd like to pick up the item you are going to request. Second, enter your library card number into the box at right, and then click the Begin Searching the Virtual Catalog button.

From that point on, searching and requesting in the Virtual Catalog works just like it did before - find the item you'd like, click the blue request button, and complete the form. You can also check your Virtual Catalog account to view the status of the requests you've placed through the Virtual Catalog.

Changes to Massachusetts Libraries and Requesting Items

Requesting items from the library is changing a little.

On July 1st, 2010, Massachusetts Library Regions (which facilitates lending books between libraries throughout the Commonwealth) will be condensed from six regions to one. This will cause two impacts to patrons of the Chelmsford Library, which is summarized in the official wording from the MVLC:

Due to the 28% cut in state tax support for Massachusetts libraries, materials delivered to you from other Massachusetts libraries may experience a delay, or materials obtained from libraries outside of Massachusetts may be assessed a charge by your local library, as of July 1, 2010.

1. Because delivery centers, routes, and regional staff are changing, items requested from outside the MVLC may take longer to arrive. We're not sure what the impact will be, but we do expect delays as the new system is put in place.
2. Chelmsford residents will not pay any fees to request items through the Chelmsford Library. However, non-residents will be charged $5.00 for any item that cannot be requested through the MVLC or state-wide Virtual Catalog. Any patron who fails to pick up an out-of-system item may lose the ability to place ILL requests. Also, any patron who returns an out-of-system item late may be charged an overdue fine (depending on the loaning library)

1. Search the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium catalog
You can search for and request items by starting at http://catalog.chelmsfordlibrary.org (you'll need your library card barcode and PIN) - instructions for requesting items online

2. Search the state-wide Virtual Catalog
If the item you're looking for isn't in the MVLC system, click the Virtual Catalog link at the top of the MVLC catalog page (you'll need your library card barcode)

3. Request an item through library staff
If you can't find the item on your own, library staff can search outside the state for the item and request it on your behalf. Non-Chelmsford residents will be charged $5.00 (non-refundable) for this service, so check with your home library to see if they will request it free.

Requesting an Item Online

As a patron of the Chelmsford Library, you have access to the books, movies, magazines and other materials of the 36 member libraries of the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium.

You can request items in Chelmsford and/or from other libraries, and these items will be sent to Chelmsford for you to pickup.

To request an item through our online catalog, first search for the title you're looking for. Then, on either the search results screen or the item details screen, you should see a "Request Item" button on the right side.

When you click that you'll be prompted to enter your library card number (no spaces) and your PIN. Your PIN should be the last four digits of the telephone number you gave us when you signed up for your library card.

If that doesn't work, please call us at 978-256-5521 x211 and we can reset your PIN.
