New Additions to Forms on File

Thursday, July 26th, 2007 - by: Brian Herzog, Head of Reference

Forms on File, one of the Library's new databases, has just announced they have added a significant amount of new content.

This resource, which can be used to important forms ranging from personal, business, legal, real estate, etc., has been updated to reflect recent changes in government agency forms and cover everything from affidavits to employee evaluations and applications for Social Security benefits.

New and updated forms include:

  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) 2007-2008: For students. Used by virtually all two- and four-year colleges, universities, and career schools for the awarding of federal student aid and most state and college aid.
  • Report of International Transportation of Currency or Monetary Instruments: For patrons departing or entering the United States, or patrons shipping, mailing, or receiving currency or monetary instruments.
  • Financing Eligibility Statement—"Economic Disadvantage": For small business owners. Used by goverment agencies in order to determine patrons' personal eligibility for their businesses to receive financing under Section 301(d) of the Small Business Investment Act.

To access these forms, log in from the Library's Databases webpage, or contact the Reference Desk for help.

Updated Career Guidance Resource

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007 - by: Brian Herzog, Head of Reference

Our career guidance database has a new look! The changes to the database include a fresh and cleaner look, better search capabilities, a Career Opportunity News newsletter, and a great deal more content.

The Library subscribes to Ferguson's Career Guidance Center, from Facts on File, which is a resource offering information on jobs, careers, scholarships, industries, work skills, resumes & cover letters, and more. Patrons looking to find a job, change careers or just improve their job qualifications, can use this database to find out what skills different jobs require, and then get tips on how to obtain those skills.

To log in and start using this information, go to the Career Guidance listing of our database page, and either click on "In Library" (if you're in the library), or if you're at home, enter your library card number and click the Login button.

For assistance with this or any of the library's other databases, please contact the Reference Desk.

New Online Subject Guides

Thursday, May 10th, 2007 - by: Brian Herzog, Head of Reference

Two new subject guides are available on the Library's website.

One relates to Consumer Information, and includes resources such as Consumer Reports, Boston Consumer Checkbook, lists of buying guide books in the library, and links to websites offering product/service ratings, information on shopping and buying, and resources from the government.

The second guide covers Health Resources, including research databases provided by the library, a listing of where in the collection books of various health topics can be found, and a long list of web links to health-related websites, organized by topic. Many of the website are "starred resources," as they are recommended by the Health Studies Librarian of Simmons College.

Links to both of these subject guides, as well as many others, can be found on the Library's website. For help in using the guides, or with researching other topics, please contact the Reference Desk.
