The well-known and much-loved purple beech tree, planted on the common in 1892, was taken down in November 2012. Present on that day was local photographer Steve Hardwood, who chronicled the process of bringing the tree down.
He donated his series of photographs to the library, to commemorate the event and the life of the tree. Steve's photographs were supplemented by additional photos from the collections of Fred Merriam and the Chelmsford Historical Society, and Library staff also researched news articles about the tree.
This entire collection was then framed and hung in the Group Study Room, on the lower level of the Library, near the Library's other historical resources. Please check out this tribute the next time you're in the Library.
The Library would like to thank Steve Hardwood for getting the ball rolling, and also Fred Merriam and the Chelmsford Historical Society for contributing to the project. The generosity of community members like this helps preserve Chelmsford for future generations.Posted in Library Information, Resources | No Comments »

The winning photographs from the Winterfest 2012 photo contest are currently on display outside the library's Meeting Room. We also uploaded these photographs to the library’s flickr account for an online gallery, but seeing them in person with their ribbons is much more impressive.
The winners in each category are listed below, and are also linked to the online photographs.
The photo contest is a part of every Winterfest, so be sure to carry your camera with you and submit your best shots next year!Posted in Events | No Comments »

Last night's session with Loreen Liberty, of TLM Studios, focused on the technical aspects of a digital camera: how to set resolution, compression, what memory card and batteries, to use, etc. Next week, on March 19th, Loreen will switch from the technical to the creative aspects of photographs - choosing subjects, balancing foreground and background, paying attention to color and lighting, and much more.
The third and final workshop, on April 2nd, will give one example of what can be done with the pictures you take with your digital camera. Brian Herzog of the Chelmsford Library will demonstrate how the photo sharing website flickr can be used to store, organize and share photographs.
