I believe it isn&#039;t to do with the EPUB format, but more with the Digital Rights Management (DRM) that is required for library patrons to check books in and out.  However, since the iPad is such a new device, I am hopeful that the situation will improve.  It took Apple awhile to permit Overdrive audiobooks to play on the iPod, but eventually they did.  Overdrive does list the iPad as a &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.overdrive.com/resources/drc/&quot; rel=&quot;nofollow&quot;&gt;compatible device for their audiobooks&lt;/a&gt;, which also leads me to believe that it is just a matter of time until ebooks work, too.
