I believe it isn't to do with the EPUB format, but more with the Digital Rights Management (DRM) that is required for library patrons to check books in and out. However, since the iPad is such a new device, I am hopeful that the situation will improve. It took Apple awhile to permit Overdrive audiobooks to play on the iPod, but eventually they did. Overdrive does list the iPad as a <a href="http://www.overdrive.com/resources/drc/" rel="nofollow">compatible device for their audiobooks</a>, which also leads me to believe that it is just a matter of time until ebooks work, too. In the meantime however, I am sorry the Overdrive ebooks do not work with the iPad.
