Check Out Our Museum PassesFriday, April 25th, 2008 - by: Brian Herzog, Head of ReferenceThe Chelmsford Library has discount passes to 17 different area museums, parks, zoos and other attractions. If you’re looking for something to do this weekend or this summer, these passes offer a great way to explore the area economically. All of the passes available through the Library are paid for by the Friends of the Chelmsford Library group. As such, they are available to all Chelmsford residents and any member of the Friends, regardless of residency. If you don’t live in Chelmsford but would like to use our passes, you can join the Friends group to get access. To view or reserve a pass, first click on the Museum Passes link from our homepage. From there, available passes are viewable By Date or By Museum, and you drill down to the right pass on the right day just by clicking. To request a pass, click the green “Request Pass” button and log in your your library card number and your PIN (usually, the last four digits of your telephone number). When requesting, you can choose to be receive a reminder email 24 or 48 hours before your reservation. Make sure you see the reservation confirmation screen before ending the process. Reserved passes can be picked up in person at the Circulation Desk the day before or the day of the reservation, using the library card they were reserved under. For questions about making or canceling a reservation, or about the museums themselves, please contact the Reference Desk. New Board of Library TrusteesFriday, April 18th, 2008 - by: Brian Herzog, Head of Reference
Charlie is replacing long-time Trustee Betty McCarthy, who decided not to run for another term after helping guide the Library for almost 40 years. Betty received the Outstanding Trustee Award from the Massachusetts Library Trustees Association in 2006, becoming only the eighth individual to earn this honor. Following the Town-wide election, the Board itself met to elect new officers. This meeting saw Charlie immediately jumping into things by serving as the Board’s Treasurer. Lisa Daigle is the new Chair, and David Braslau the new Vice Chair. See the Library’s website for a complete listing of the Library’s Board of Trustees. For more information on Charlie Wojtas, his background and his plans for the Library, check out the article “Library is all in the family” in this week’s Chelmsford Independent. DTV Is Coming - Are You Ready?Saturday, April 12th, 2008 - by: Brian Herzog, Head of Reference
The advantages of digital television are many, as digital broadcasting provides a clearer picture, more programming options, and will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders. In order for you to continue to watch television, you’ll need to have either a DTV-ready television set, or buy a digital converter box for your television. In preparation for this switch, the federal government is sponsoring a coupon program for citizens who need to buy a converter box. For more information on the coupon program, please visit http://www.dtv2009.gov. More information on DTV:
But be warned - because this is such a widespread program and affects so many people, there are already reports of scams and misleading advertising: Make sure you get enough information before you purchase a converter box or new television. For product reviews, check out our Consumer Information Resources webpage, or contact the Reference Desk for help. Have You Done Your Taxes Yet?Friday, April 4th, 2008 - by: Brian Herzog, Head of Reference
The Library still has both Federal and State tax forms and instructions, available downstairs near the Reference Desk. Forms are also available on both the IRS website (index of forms) and the MA Dept. of Revenue website (index of forms). If you need help with your taxes, the AARP offers volunteer tax assistants through their Tax-Aide program. All of the appointments with the Library’s tax assistant are filled, but you can check other area sites for appointments. The Federal government is also offering a Tax Rebate this year, otherwise known as the Economic Stimulus Payment. Please note that even if you are not normally required to file taxes, you may be required to file this year to receive the tax rebate - read more about this. The IRS has also released the tax rebate payment schedule, so you’ll have an idea of when your check will arrive. If you need tax forms or have questions about the tax rebate program, please contact the Reference Desk. |
